Where to Find Us

The main offices for the John Muir Institute of the Environment are located in The Barn near the center of the UC Davis campus. The Barn is a historic horse barn southwest of the Silo, near Giedt and Kemper Halls.

Along with the administrative offices for the John Muir Institute of the Environment, The Barn hosts offices for several of JMIE's programs including the Public Service Research Program, UC Davis Natural Reserve System and Road Ecology Center. The Barn is also home for the Center for Spatial Technologies and Remote Sensing, California Space Institute of Excellence and a branch of the Californian Cooperative Ecosystem Study Unit.

Directions for Off-Campus Visitors

Parking for visitors to The Barn is most convenient in Visitor Parking (VP) Lots 40, 47 or the West Parking Structure.

Exit Interstate 80 to follow Hwy 113 north toward Woodland. Take Hutchison Drive exit and turn right on Hutchison Drive (east bound).

West Parking Structure and VP 40: From east bound Hutchison Drive, continue straight past the LaRue stoplight to the West Parking Structure stoplight. Turn left at the light to enter the parking sturcture. Alternatively, continue straight through the light; at the first stop sign turn right into parking lot 41 and drive to the west end of the parking lot to Visitor Parking Lot 40.

VP 47: From east bound Hutchison Drive turn right at the first stoplight onto La Rue Road. Follow La Rue Road south and around the bend toward the east. Turn left into Visitor Parking Lot 47.

Short term parking (metered parking, 45 minutes or less) is available on Bioletti Way and in Parking Lot 43. On Hutchison Drive, pass straight through the stoplight at the West Parking Structure/Dairy Road and the stop sign at Kleiber Hall Drive/Parking Lot 41. Turn right at the second stop sign onto Bioletti Way -- metered spaces are on both sides of the road. Alternatively, proceed straight through the stop sign at Bioletti, and turn right into the second driveway, Parking Lot 41, just past the Surge IV building, before the Silo.

Visitor Parking Information

A valid UCD permit is required to park on campus. Daily Visitor Permits (VP) are available for $9.00 and may be purchased from permit dispensing machines located at the entrances to VP Lots 1, 2, 5, 15, 17, 22, 25, 30, 31, 35, 40, 47, 49, 50, 53, 55, 56, 57, 81, Hopkins Parking Facility, Putah Creek Lodge, and the North, South, and West Entry Parking Structures. Visitors also have the option of purchasing a multi-use visitor permit (up to 10 uses) or an EasyPark Personal Parking Meter from the TAPS office.

Visitor permits are valid for the date purchased and are honored in the above lots Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The cost of Visitor parking permits is not refundable. Permits should be displayed on the driver's side dashboard of the vehicle. Visitor permits are not honored in restricted spaces.

After 5pm, Visitor Permits are also available for $9.00 from permit dispensing machines located at many of the entrances to "A" Permit parking lots. These permits are valid in non-restricted parking spaces and at meters Monday through Friday, and are valid only on the night purchased. Permit dispensers accept Visa and Master Card only.

Parking Meters are available to any motor vehicle for the time purchased by coin (or when an EasyPark is displayed and in use), not to exceed the length of time posted for the area. Meter feeding is prohibited. The vehicle must be moved when the maximum time has elapsed.
