Postdoctoral Fellowship-UC Berkeley Sustainability & Health Equity (S/HE) Lab

From UC Berkeley’s Sustainability and Health Equity (S/HE) Lab, deadline 12/22/17:

Are you interested in working in an exciting research environment addressing issues of environmental equity and sustainability?  The Sustainability and Health Equity (S/HE) Lab at UC Berkeley seeks a Postdoctoral Fellow to join our team of interdisciplinary scientists working on drinking water equity and climate justice issues in California and beyond.

The Sustainability and Health Equity Lab is affiliated with the Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management and the School of Public Health and conducts policy-relevant research that seeks to address race and class determinants of environmental health disparities among diverse communities in the US with a focus on environmental chemicals, climate change, air pollution, and drinking water.  We seek to promote training in environmental health research, community-based participatory research, and research translation to advance environmental health and equity in policy and regulation.

The S/HE Lab has recently launched two major projects: 1) The Water Equity Science Shop (WESS)-- a community-academic collaborative between researchers (UC Berkeley, San Francisco State University and Cal-EPA’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA)) and water justice advocates (Community Water Center) working to reduce health risks associated with drinking water quality problems in California’s San Joaquin Valley that disproportionately burden low income communities of color and rural households; 2) The Climate Justice Initiative, which conducts research to inform the implementation of California’s climate change law in ways that enhance the health and environmental equity co-benefits of greenhouse gas reduction strategies.  Together, these two projects will conduct novel research that addresses community-identified health equity concerns and that informs regulation and policy-making to identify scientifically informed solutions.

The postdoctoral fellow will work on these multi-year projects funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences Superfund Research Program (WESS) and Cal-EPA’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (Climate Justice Initiative). The postdoctoral fellow will conduct research for both projects in collaboration with S/HE Lab scientific mentors (Drs. Rachel Morello-Frosch, Lara Cushing and Carolina Balazs) and other collaborators, and will gain experience in all aspects of the scientific enterprise, including study design, data analysis, and publication of results.  The postdoctoral fellow will also collaborate with community partners to develop workshops to identify community-relevant research needs, as well as research translation activities to reach decision-makers and inform policy-making.  The ideal candidate will be motivated to conduct cutting edge research (~60-70% time), as well as work with community and agency partners on research translation and research planning processes (30-40%).
