Climate change is intimately linked to human political and economic institutions. Rampant economic activity drives climate change as massive amounts of fossil fuels are introduced into the atmosphere. Economic and political interests often resist the efforts to curb emissions because of the cost that must be incurred to achieve reductions at an appropriate scale. However, policy and economics are also our most powerful tools for combating climate change. Reducing carbon emissions, whether through a cap-and-trade system or another mechanism, is a fundamentally political and economic endeavor.
