John Muir Institute of the Environment

People

JMIE represents hundreds of faculty, researchers, staff and students who are physically distributed throughout the campus and region. Through the John Muir Institute of the Environment, they collaborate to develop and communicate a greater understanding of the natural and human environment.

Director

Deb Niemeier, professor of civil and environmental engineering, was appointed director of the John Muir Institute of the Environment in June of 2005, with a joint appointment as associate vice chancellor for interdisciplinary environmental research in the Office of the Vice Chancellor of Research.

Core Staff

Our dedicated staff works together to accomplish the goals of the institute. Nine core staff fulfill the administrative, technological and communicative needs of the institute and provide services and assistance to JMIE centers, project initiatives and faculty.

The 119 faculty and researchers affiliated with the John Muir Institute of the Environment are leaders in interdisciplinary problem-solving, facing the environmental challenges of resource management, pollution, climate change, ecological economics, technology, urban development, society and culture.
