UC Davis geologist Charles Lesher is part of a team of physicists and earth scientists studying why heavier isotopes diffuse faster within matter at uneven temperature. Their experiments and computer simulations suggest that heavier molecules and atoms use their slightly larger momentum to push past lighter ones when moving from hot regions to colder ones.
