According to a new study by UC Davis, deforestation may actually cool northern latitudes. Kyaw Tha Paw U, UC Davis atmospheric science professor, says it all depends on where the deforestation is taking place. "It could have some cooling effects at the regional scale, at higher latitudes, but there's no indication deforestation is cooling lower latitudes, and in fact may actually cause warming," he said. He cautions that these findings are not a "green light" to cutting down forests, but rather a clarification of differences in regional effects.
