There are many functions for which any given extent of land can be used. Should it be used for residence, agriculture, industry, natural resource production, recreation, or conservation? This decision is based on a wide variety of factors both innate to the land and depending on what resources, infrastructure, and land-uses surround it. The environmental consequences of land use depend entirely on what a land is used for, and how it is used to serve that function. Through land use planning, people seek to minimize environmental impacts by using lands intelligently and efficiently by matching lands to the uses for which they are most appropriate.
