Anthropogenic activity introduces billions of tons of green house gases into the atmosphere every year. It is essential to understand how these compounds behave, and by which mechanisms they exert their effects. Although carbon dioxide is not the most potent greenhouse gas, it is by far the most abundant, and makes the greatest contribution to the greenhouse effect. Understanding how carbon cycles from the atmosphere into the terrestrial and marine environments is necessary to create more accurate climate predictions and set appropriate carbon reduction targets.
