John Muir Institute of the Environment
Center for Watershed Sciences
Collaborative learning for a sustainable future
The new Watershed Sciences Building is a testament to UC Davis' commitment to solving the state's most pressing environmental challenges. The building houses the John Muir Institute of the Environment's Center for Watershed Sciences -- a group of top experts from the physical and biological sciences who are working together with stakeholders to fully understand river, stream and estuary systems in California. Center researchers work to strengthen the scientific foundation for sustainable and cost-effective restoration and management of these ecosystems.
The Center for Watershed Sciences has brought new attention to the state of fisheries and waterways in Northern California by:
- Documenting the ecology of native fishes and their ecosystems in California's waterways and evaluating the success of restoration efforts.
- Maintaining long-term ecological monitoring programs in the Delta, Suisun Marsh and Northern California rivers and streams.
- Researching the effects of levee breaches on floodplains in order to guide proposed restoration efforts for floodplains in the Central Valley.
- Developing innovative, state-of-the-art research and monitoring tools to support effective management of aquatic and riparian resources.
- Partnering with nongovernmental organizations, public agencies and private entities to integrate research and teaching with on-the-ground stewardship activities.
This facility - through its interdisciplinary approach to field work, lab work, data analysis and student training - is producing a new generation of scientists, engineers and policy analysts trained to work together on complex environmental problems.
Naming opportunities are available to recognize major gifts that support the Center for Watershed Sciences or the Watershed Sciences Building. Individual labs may be named, as can prominent indoor and outdoor gathering spaces.
