Tahoe Environmental Research Center

Integrating environmental science, outreach and education for a sustainable future

The Tahoe Environmental Research Center is dedicated to research, education and public outreach on lakes and their surrounding watersheds and airsheds. The center is particularly committed to providing objective scientific information for restoration and sustainable use of the Lake Tahoe Basin, continuing the work that was initiated in 1958 by Dr. Charles Goldman.

The Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences is a $33 million partnership between UC Davis, Sierra Nevada College, the Desert Research Institute and University of Nevada, Reno to create a world-class environmental science and education building at Incline Village. The building provides research facilities for all four research partners, including UC Davis' Tahoe Environmental Research Center. UC Davis hosts the Thomas J. Long Foundation Education Center on the first floor of the 45,000-square-foot facility. The education center features an interactive venue to attract all ages, with activities especially for school children.

The Tahoe Environmental Research Center is seeking funds to support educational and research installations at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences and in the Tahoe basin. The following is a small sample of some of the projects that need support:

  • A state-of-the-art 3-D visualization center and thematic display on the Tahoe basin
  • A digital reading wall to teach visitors about regional ecology
  • Maps, models, exhibits and hands-on activities that explain how science helps resource managers protect watersheds and the forests
  • Remote sensing equipment to detect UV radiation to a depth of 350 feet
  • A portable device for viewing microscopic ecology in moving water, an important tool for maintaining and demonstrating lake clarity

Several rooms and laboratories within the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences are available to be named in recognition of gifts supporting research and education at Lake Tahoe. Donations help researchers link knowledge obtained in the field with education and public outreach throughout the region, the state and the world.
