How do floodplains benefit juvenile salmon? Who uses how much water in CA? Why is the Delta stressed out? What should we do with subsiding Delta islands? Where can we conserve more precious water resources? Check out the CaliforniaWaterBlog to find what our researchers have to say on these issues and more.

Coasts and Oceans

In the US half of all people live within 50 miles of the coast. This pattern holds true for the rest of the world as well. For this reason coastal lands and waters have been vastly transformed, and have great demands placed upon them. Coastal lands are heavily urbanized, and the ocean receives much of the wastes and pollutants generated by human activity. Seafood is a major source of protein for people, especially in the developing world, and as a result many fisheries are on the brink of collapse. Addressing issues in any system this politically and ecologically complex and dynamic requires massive collaboration and interdisciplinary interaction.
