The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy is pleased to announce the 3rd ACEEE Forum on Energy Efficiency in Agriculture. The "Ag Forum" will be held February 8-10, 2010 at the picturesque Monona Terrace in Madison, Wisconsin. This conference is organized with partners and Co-Chairs, Amelia Gulkis (EnSave), Rich Hackner (Wisconsin Focus on Energy and GDS Associates), and Mike Morris (National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT)).

The ACEEE hosted a successful Forum on Energy Efficiency in Agriculture in 2008. The previous Ag Forum focused on the intersection of food, fuel, and sustainable agriculture, which resulted in spirited sessions addressing issues in agricultural communities across the country. Details about the 2008 Ag Forum are on their Web site: http://aceee.org/conf/08ag/index.htm.

Since the 2008 Ag Forum, the national conversation about energy, agriculture, food, and fuel has continued at all levels. Congress passed a new Farm Bill in the Spring of 2008, which included several important energy efficiency-related provisions, notably the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP). A new president has taken office, and a new organic garden is growing on the White House lawn.

With all of this in mind, ACEEE has begun organizing a third Ag Forum to address the importance of energy efficiency on farms, ranches, and throughout rural communities across the country. The Ag Forum traditionally convenes a diverse group of participants-from utilities and policymakers to farmers and ranchers, scientists, and advocates-and the ACEEE Ag Team is working hard to expand the network to bring more voices and ideas to the next Ag Forum.

ACEEE is beginning to develop the steering committee, themes, and agenda. They welcome feedback and comments. ACEEE conferences are participatory events, so registrants are invited to help by volunteering to organize panels or sessions, recruit speakers, and publicize the Ag Forum. To keep conference registration fees low, sthey are seeking sponsors for this event. Watch the Web site for updated information as it becomes available: www.aceee.org/pubsmeetings/curmtgindex.htm

Mark your calendar now for the 3rd ACEEE Forum on Energy Efficiency in Agriculture: February 8-10 2010 in Madison!

California Small Farm Conference

Date:

February 28 - March 2, 2010

Location:

San Diego, CA

Web site:

http://www.californiafarmconference.com/joomla/

The California Small Farm Conference is the state's premier gathering of small farmers and those who support them. The three day educational conference includes on-farm tours, focused workshops, general educational sessions and opportunities for peer networking.

The 2010 California Small Farm Conference will be February 28 to March 2, 2010 in San Diego.

The conference will take place at the San Diego Marriott Del Mar. Rooms at the discounted rate of $110 per night are available if you reserve by January 23.

The theme of the conference – Sustaining our Bounty – reflects the incredible bounty of agricultural products that the state of California produces. California leads the state in the production of many valuable agricultural products and California Grown is a respected symbol of quality throughout the world. California's small farmers are an integral part of this agricultural system and are the leaders and innovators whose efforts are helping to prepare the state for the challenges ahead.

As the nation and the state continue to struggle in a weakened economy and with a statewide drought, small farmers, as well as farmers' market managers, are seeking ideas to help them sustain the progress they have made and find opportunities to continue to diversify, grow, improve and expand their operations. The 2010 California Small Farm Conference will bring them those ideas.

Through day-long short courses and farm tours, intensive classroom workshops, engaging keynote addresses and numerous networking opportunities, the 2010 California Small Farm Conference will give small farmers, farmers' market managers and others in California's small farm industry the information they need to be successful.

Geomorphic and Ecological Fundamentals for River and Stream Restoration

Sagehen Creek Field Station Shortcourse

Date:

August 16-20, 2010

Location:

Sagehen Creek Field Station
near Lake Tahoe, California

Web site:

http://sagehen.ucnrs.org/courses/geomorph.htm

Sagehen Creek Field Station is offering this shortcourse in August, 2010. River restoration has become big business in the US, with well over $17b spent on over 40 thousand projects since 1990.

River restoration can be more effective when it is designed with an understanding of processes and the larger context, when it benefits from systematic learning from previous built projects, and when it is based on predictive connections between objectives and actions.

This shortcourse emphasizes sustainable river restoration through:
* Understanding geomorphic and ecological processes in rivers.
* Watershed-scale and longer-time scale context.
* Incorporating insights from recent research in fluvial geomorphology and ecology.
* Developing predictive connections between objectives and actions.
* Analyses of effectiveness of built restoration projects.
* Strategies to restore (where possible) physical and ecological processes in rivers.
* Setting goals in the context of a continuum from urban-to-wilderness settings.
* Developing restoration strategies and innovative management approaches based on understanding of underlying causes of channel or ecosystem change, rather than prescriptive approaches.
* Knowing when to intervene and when the river can heal itself without meddling.

The course is ideal for anyone responsible for managing and restoring rivers and streams, including those who have previously taken shortcourses in the field, as this course offers insights and approaches unlike those typically taken in many restoration projects today.

For registration and more information please see the Web site.
