Sacramento City College Science and Allied Health & Staff Resource Center Present

Pacific Garbage Patch

Dr. Margie Gassel, CalEPA

Date:

November 23, 2009

Time:

6:00pm -7:00pm

Location:

LR 105
Sacramento City College

Dr. Margie Gassel with CalEPA recently returned from a research cruise sponsored by Project Kaisei to investigate the Pacific Garbage Patch. "Every day, every night, we'd pull up samples and pour the water through a sieve. It would be completely clogged with tiny pieces of plastic," Dr. Gassel told the San Jose Mercury-News upon her return. "It was so disturbing." Project Kaisei’s mission was to study the North Pacific Gyre and the marine debris that has collected in this oceanic region, to determine how to capture the debris and to study the possible retrieval and processing techniques that could be potentially employed to detoxify and recycle these materials into diesel fuel. Dr. Gassel will give a 30 min presentation (plus time for questions) about the project and her research. The talk is geared to both the general and the scientific audience.

The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy is pleased to announce the 3rd ACEEE Forum on Energy Efficiency in Agriculture. The "Ag Forum" will be held February 8-10, 2010 at the picturesque Monona Terrace in Madison, Wisconsin. This conference is organized with partners and Co-Chairs, Amelia Gulkis (EnSave), Rich Hackner (Wisconsin Focus on Energy and GDS Associates), and Mike Morris (National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT)).

The ACEEE hosted a successful Forum on Energy Efficiency in Agriculture in 2008. The previous Ag Forum focused on the intersection of food, fuel, and sustainable agriculture, which resulted in spirited sessions addressing issues in agricultural communities across the country. Details about the 2008 Ag Forum are on their Web site: http://aceee.org/conf/08ag/index.htm.

Since the 2008 Ag Forum, the national conversation about energy, agriculture, food, and fuel has continued at all levels. Congress passed a new Farm Bill in the Spring of 2008, which included several important energy efficiency-related provisions, notably the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP). A new president has taken office, and a new organic garden is growing on the White House lawn.

With all of this in mind, ACEEE has begun organizing a third Ag Forum to address the importance of energy efficiency on farms, ranches, and throughout rural communities across the country. The Ag Forum traditionally convenes a diverse group of participants-from utilities and policymakers to farmers and ranchers, scientists, and advocates-and the ACEEE Ag Team is working hard to expand the network to bring more voices and ideas to the next Ag Forum.

ACEEE is beginning to develop the steering committee, themes, and agenda. They welcome feedback and comments. ACEEE conferences are participatory events, so registrants are invited to help by volunteering to organize panels or sessions, recruit speakers, and publicize the Ag Forum. To keep conference registration fees low, sthey are seeking sponsors for this event. Watch the Web site for updated information as it becomes available: www.aceee.org/pubsmeetings/curmtgindex.htm

Mark your calendar now for the 3rd ACEEE Forum on Energy Efficiency in Agriculture: February 8-10 2010 in Madison!

The Dissertations Initiative for the Advancement of Climate Change Research (DISCCRS, pronounced discourse), connects natural and social scientists engaged in research related to climate change, impacts and solutions. The goal is to broaden perspectives and establish a collegial peer network to address climate challenges at the interface of science and society.

During the week-long symposium -- held in the Tonto National Forest near Phoenix, Arizona -- participants will present and discuss their research, hone interdisciplinary communication and team skills, and discuss emerging research, societal and professional issues with each other and with established researchers invited to serve as mentors. Confirmed mentors include Julia E. Cole (University of Arizona), Jonathan T. Overpeck (University of Arizona), Billie L. Turner (Arizona State University), and David A. Randall (Colorado State University).

Participation will be limited to thirty-four early career scholars identified by an interdisciplinary committee of research scientists based on review of submitted applications.

Eligibility: PhD requirements completed April 1, 2007 - July 31, 2009. Selection will favor applicants who plan to engage in interdisciplinary research careers in any subject within or relevant to climate change, its impacts and solutions. We encourage applicants from the natural and social sciences, economics, mathematics, engineering, or any other field so long as the research focus relates to climate change, its impacts or solutions. While the emphasis is on the U.S. research system, we welcome applicants from all countries who are interested in learning about the U.S. research system and connecting with U.S. researchers.
